SHS Phase VII

The Strong Heart Study (SHS) begain in 1988 to try to help find out why some American Indian people get diseases of the heart, blood vessels, and lungs, and others do not. The SHS was also designed to better undersatnd risk factors for these diseases, like diabetes, high blood pressure, and smoking in the American Indian population. Over the past 30 years, we have learned about how to prevent and manage heart disease and related conditions because of this study. However, these diseases are still common among American Indian people. Researchers now know that diseases shouldn't be studies all by themselves but in combination with eachother. In this phase, the SHS expanded to learn more about liver disease, cancer, and inflammation in the body and how theese conditions impact risk for heart diseases and related conditions.

Data collection for SHS Phase VII was completed in May 2025.
